Wideband reflectance associated with otitis media in infants and children with cleft palate

Abstract

Wideband reflectance (WBR) is a method of middle-ear analysis that may provide more information and provide a more detailed look at the middle-ear system than tympanometry. WBR has the potential to improve efficiency of newborn hearing screening programs by reducing time needed to accurately diagnose middle-ear status. This prospective study compares wideband reflectance results with 226-Hz and 1000-Hz tympanometry and distortion product otoacoustic emissions in a group of infants and children with cleft lip and palate, who have not been treated with myringotomy or tubes. Results are also compared to normative data in children of similar ages using the same instrument and methods. Results demonstrate that wideband reflectance showed the highest level of agreement (88%) with DPOAE results.

La reflectancia de banda ancha (WBR) es un método de análisis del oído medio que puede aportar mucha información y un vistazo más detallado del sistema del oído medio que la timpanometría. La WBR tiene el potencial de mejorar la eficiencia de los programas de identificación auditiva neonatal reduciendo el tiempo necesario para diagnosticar con exactitud el estado del oído medio. Este estudio prospectivo compara los resultados de reflectancia de banda ancha con los de la timpanometría de 226 Hz y de 1000 Hz, y con las emisiones otoacústicas por productos de distorsión, en un grupo de niños con fisura labial y palatina, quienes no habían sido tratados con miringotomía o tubos timpánicos. Los resultados también se comparan con datos normativos en niños de edades similares, usando el mismo instrumento y los mismos métodos. Los resultados demuestran que la reflectancia de banda ancha mostró el más alto nivel de acuerdo (88%) con los resultados de las DPOAE.
