Non-formal learning is a significant aspect of the development of novice teachers and should be on the agenda of all policy and practice in faculty development. It involves learning the principles, approaches and practical skills of teaching. It is especially significant in developing the skills which are prerequisite to expert practice. It can be maximised through such activities as opportunities to observe and be observed, receive feedback, and variation in tasks and experience. Steps taken to enhance work-based non-formal learning should be based upon knowledge of each individual's needs, the requirements of their teaching role, and context.
