Central Sensitivity Syndromes: An Overview

ABSTRACT.

Objective: To discuss the concept of central sensitivity syndromes [CSS] and its significance. An overview of the current literature was incorporated with the author's insight and views.

Findings: A good number of disorders that show clinical overlap with fibromyalgia syndrome also meet the Yunus criteria for CSS. These criteria are based essentially on two components: mutual associations and evidence for central sensitization [CS] among them. While CS is likely to be the common binding glue for the CSS diseases, other pathophysiological mechanisms may also be involved. CSS is based on a biopsychosocial model.

Conclusions: The CSS seems to be an important concept for future research and medical education, as well as patient care.
