The Sacred Profane: Distribution, Production, Use and Meaning of Objects Associated With Pilgrimage From Present-Day Denmark

Abstract

ARTEFACTUAL FINDS ARE A SPECIAL and growing source of evidence for ritual behaviour in medieval daily life. They include items that relate to pilgrimage which are considered here. The increase in finds in recent decades in Denmark yields a more detailed picture of the role of these objects in their time than it has previously been possible to draw. This article presents the relevant data from the area of present-day Denmark with analyses of the range of finds, geographical distribution, travelling, signs of local manufacture, and the use and significance of such items. The employment of these objects is clearly more complex and bears the marks of greater continuity than thought hitherto. From their first appearance among the finds and in the sources in the 11th century to the end of the Middle Ages, they were attributed with intrinsic protective powers which could be introduced into various contexts to the benefit of the individual and of society. Throughout the period, artefacts relating to pilgrimage were multi-functional objects with innate power that derived from their origin, designs and symbolism. As practical objects for everyday ritual use, they were sometimes handled roughly which should be taken into consideration when interpreting find circumstances and secondary traces of wear.

Les découvertes artefactuelles sont une source spéciale et croissante témoignant de comportements rituels de la vie quotidienne à l’époque médiévale. Elles comprennent des objets liés aux pèlerinages qui sont examinés ici. Le nombre croissant de découvertes au Danemark au cours des dernières décennies fournit une image plus détaillée du rôle de ces objets à l'époque que ce que l’on avait pu esquisser jusqu’à présent. Cet article présente les données pertinentes dans la région du Danemark actuel avec une analyse de la gamme de vestiges, leur répartition géographique, les déplacements, les signes de fabrication locale, et l’emploi et la signification de ces objets. Leur utilisation est clairement plus complexe et montre les traces d’une plus grande continuité qu’on ne le pensait. Dès leur première apparition parmi les vestiges et dans les sources du onzième siècle jusqu’au milieu du Moyen-Âge, des pouvoirs intrinsèques de protection leur ont été conférés, qui pouvaient se manifester dans divers contextes au bénéfice de l’individu et de la société. Tout au long de la période, les artefacts liés au pèlerinage étaient des objets multifonctionnels habités d’un pouvoir inné découlant de leur origine, conception et symbolisme. En tant qu’objets pratiques destinés à un rituel quotidien, ils étaient parfois maltraités, ce qui doit être pris en compte pour l’interprétation des circonstances de la découverte et des traces secondaires d’usure.

Das heilige Profane: Verbreitung, Herstellung, Verwendung und Bedeutung von Pilgerobjekten aus dem heutigen Dänemark von Mette Højmark Søvsø

Artefaktische Funde sind eine besondere und wachsende Quelle von Beweisen für rituelles Verhalten im mittelalterlichen Alltag. Dazu gehören auch Gegenstände, die sich auf Pilgerreisen beziehen und die hier betrachtet werden. Die Zunahme an Funden in den letzten Jahrzehnten in Dänemark ergibt ein detaillierteres Bild von der Rolle dieser Gegenstände in ihrer Zeit, als es bisher gezeichnet werden konnte. In diesem Artikel werden die relevanten Daten aus dem Gebiet des heutigen Dänemark mit Analysen des Fundumfangs, der geographischen Verteilung, der Reisen, der Anzeichen für eine lokale Herstellung sowie der Verwendung und Bedeutung dieser Gegenstände vorgestellt. Die Verwendung dieser Gegenstände ist eindeutig komplexer und weist eine größere Kontinuität auf als bisher angenommen. Von ihrem ersten Auftauchen unter den Funden und in den Quellen im elften Jahrhundert bis zum Ende des Mittelalters wurden ihnen Schutzkräfte zugeschrieben, die in verschiedenen Zusammenhängen zum Nutzen des Einzelnen und der Gesellschaft eingesetzt werden konnten. Im gesamten Zeitraum waren Artefakte im Zusammenhang mit Pilgerfahrten multifunktionale Objekte mit einer natürlichen Macht, die sich aus ihrer Herkunft, ihrem Design und ihrer Symbolik ergab. Als praktische Objekte für den alltäglichen rituellen Gebrauch wurden sie manchmal grob behandelt, was bei der Interpretation der Fundumstände und sekundären Gebrauchsspuren berücksichtigt werden sollte.

La sacralità di oggetti profani: distribuzione, produzione, uso e significato di oggetti collegati al pellegrinaggio provenienti dalla Danimarca odierna di Mette Højmark Søvsø

I ritrovamenti di manufatti sono una fonte particolare e crescente di testimonianze relative al comportamento rituale nella vita quotidiana durante il Medioevo. Tra questi vi sono oggetti che hanno attinenza con il pellegrinaggio ed è a questi che si fa riferimento qui. L’aumento di ritrovamenti in Danimarca degli ultimi decenni ha fatto sì che si abbia un quadro più preciso di quanto sia mai stato possibile in passato riguardo al ruolo rivestito da questi oggetti ai loro tempi. Questo articolo presenta i dati relativi all’area della Danimarca attuale con le analisi della serie di ritrovamenti, la distribuzione geografica, i viaggi, le indicazioni di manifatture locali e l’uso e il significato di tali oggetti. L’utilizzazione di questi oggetti è chiaramente più complessa e dimostra una continuità maggiore di quanto non si pensasse in precedenza. Già dalla loro prima comparsa, attestata dai reperti e dalle fonti nell’undicesimo secolo e fino alla fine del Medioevo, si attribuivano loro intrinseci poteri di protezione che potevano entrare a far parte di vari contesti a beneficio dell’individuo e della società. In tutto il periodo, i manufatti relativi al pellegrinaggio erano oggetti multifunzionali che possedevano un potere innato derivante dalla loro origine, dal design e dal simbolismo. In quanto oggetti pratici di uso rituale quotidiano, venivano talvolta maneggiati in modo brusco, cosa che va tenuta in considerazione nell’interpretare le circostanze dei ritrovamenti e le tracce secondarie di usura.
