Abstract

Today’s transportation plays a vital role in meeting essential necessities and bridging the demand-supply gap. Crude oil is the primary source of energy for transport systems. The burning of diesel fuel causes greenhouse gas emissions. In this scenario, the use of alternative energy sources, such as biodiesel, is required. Several scholars debated the influence of biofuels on the emission characteristics of diesel engines, and the results demonstrated an increase in NOx emission owing to increase oxygen content. NOx emissions were reduced using fuel additives and emission control strategies. Most of the engine performances have been decided based on the fuel additives; biodiesel additives play an important role in emission control, brake thermal efficiency, and brake-specific fuel consumption. This review discusses different types of biodiesel blends, fuel additives, and their characteristics for the betterment of research initiatives.
