The Modern Technology of Radiation Oncology, Volume 2

Jacob Van Dyk (editor) Medical Physics Publishing, 2005, 466 pages ISBN: 1-930524-25-0 Price: Hardcover USD 120.00, softcover USD 100.00 This new volume has taken up the only appeal mentioned in the review of the first volume: To keep the book updated in the future. Because of the rapid advances and innovations in the fields of radiotherapy technology during the last five years, “The Modern Technology of Radiation Oncology Volume 2” is a very welcome updated successor to the extensive Volume 1 published in 1999.

The 466 pages make up a comprehensive and well researched yet balanced textbook covering the essentials of topics such as image guided radiotherapy, inverse planning, radiobiological modelling, breathing adapted radiotherapy, IMRT and prostate brachytherapy. In this way Volume 2 is a perfect way of getting an introduction and update of the recent advances in a short time. Each chapter starts with a brief but much appreciated historical overview and concludes with a short summary of the subjects covered. As in Volume 1 the text is very useful seen both from a clinical and a technical point of view – and it is written in a straightforward way, which is a pleasure to read.

In conclusion, we can only fully recommend this volume for both the newly-baked as well as the experienced physicist or oncologist who is looking for a compendium of the recent advances in radiation oncology technology.
