Age at menarche in athletes and their mothers and sisters

Summary

Retrospective ages at menarche were obtained from 109 university athletes and their mothers, and from 77 sisters of the athletes. The athletes were participants in seven sports. Mean age (±SD) at menarche of the 109 athletes was identical with that of the total sample of 338 athletes from which they were drawn, 13·8 ± 1·5 years. Mean age at menarche in the mothers was 13·4 ± 1·7 years. When mothers were grouped as having been athletes (n = 52) or non-athletes (n = 57), menarcheal ages were, respectively, 13·7 ± 1·8 years and 13·2 ± 1·5 years. The mother-daughter correlation for age at menarche was 0·25. Corresponding correlations between athletes and mothers who were athletes and between athletes and mothers who were not athletes were 0·24 and 0·22, respectively. Ages at menarche in athletes who had sisters (n = 62) and their sisters (n = 77) were 14·0 ± 1·4 and 13·6 ± 1·6 years, respectively. The intraclass sister-sister correlation was 0·44. Familial resemblance in age at menarche in athletes, their mothers and sisters, is identical with that in the general population, and suggests that later menarche commonly observed in athletes is to a large extent familial.

Von 109 Universitätsathletinnen und ihren Müttern sowie 77 Schwestern der Athletinnen wurden retrospektive Menarchealterdaten erhoben. Es handelte sich um Sportlerinnen aus 7 verschiedenen Disziplinen. Das mittlere Menarchealter (± SD) der 109 Athletinnen entsprach dem der Gesamtstichprobe von 338 Athletinnen, aus denen sie ausgewählt wurden, 13·8 ± 1·5 Jahre. Das mittlere Menarchealter der Mütter betrug 13·4 ± 1·7 Jahre. Bei Unterteilung der Mütter unter dem Aspekt, ob sie ebenfalls Athletinnen waren (n = 52) oder nicht (n = 57), ergaben sich 13·7 ± 1·8 Jahre und 13·2 ± 1·5 Jahre als mittlere Menarchealter. Die Mutter-Tochter Korrelation im Menarchealter betrug 0·25. Die entsprechenden Korrelationen zwischen Athletinnen und Müttern, die ebenfalls Athletinnen waren, sowie zwischen Athletinnen und Müttern, die keine Athletinnen waren, betrugen 0·24 und 0·22. Das mittlere Menarchealter der Athletinnen, die Schwestern hatten (n = 62) und ihren Schwestern (n = 77) betrug 14·0 ± 1·4 Jahre und 13·6 ± 1·6 Jahre. Die Intra-class Schwester-Schwester-Korrelation betrug 0·44. Die familiäre Ähnlichkeit im Menarchealter von Athletinnen, ihren Müttern und Schwestern entspricht der in der allgemeinen Bevölkerung. Diese Beobachtung legt nahe, daß die bei Athletinnen häufig beobachtete späte Menarche im wesentlichen familiär bedingt ist.

Les áges rétrospectifs aux premières règles, ont été obtenus de 109 athlètes universitaires et de 77 soeurs des athlètes. Les athlètes pratiquaient sept sports. L'áge moyen (+ ET) aux premières règles des 109 athlètes, était identique à celui d'un échantillon total de 338 athlètes dont ils étaient extraits: 13·8 + 1·5 ans. L'áge moyen des premières règles des mères était 13·4 + 1·7 ans. Quand les mères sont regroupées suivant qu'elles aient été elles-méme athlètes (n = 52) ou non (n = 57), les áges moyens de la ménarche sont respectivement 13·7 + 1·8 ans et 13·2 + 1·5 ans. La corrélation mère-fille pour l'áge aux premières règles est de 0·25. Les corrélations correspondantes entre athlètes et mères qui furent athlètes et entre athlètes et mères qui ne furent pas athlètes, sont respectivement de 0·24 et 0·22. Les áges aux premières règles des athlètes qui ont des soeurs (n = 62) et de leurs soeurs (n = 77) sont respectivement 14·0 + 1·4 et 13·6 + 1·6 ans. La corrélation intra-classe soeurs-soeurs est de 0·44. La ressemblance familiale de l'áge des premières règles des athlètes, de leurs mères et de leurs soeurs est identique à celle de la population en général et suggère que les premières règles tardives communément observées chez les athlètes, sont dans une large mesure d'ordre familial.
