Narcissism and Neo-Liberalism : Work, Leisure, and Alienation in an Era of Consumption

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to trace some of the links between neo-liberalism, narcissism and the influence of work, leisure and consumer culture on self-identity. By examining narcissism as an instrument of personality and social psychological analysis, we investigate the ways in which self-identity in neo-liberal societies is constructed and fulfilled through interactions with the marketplace, promoting self-interest and success in the form of wealth, admiration and bodily perfection. It is our contention that this process creates narcissistic identities, which attempt to defend the self against the degradation of work in neo-liberal societies, and where anxiety, emptiness and isolation are converted into pleasure and healing through leisure consumerism. In the final analysis we explore some of the links between narcissistic work and leisure, and psychological distress and disorders.

Résumé

Cette étude a pour objectif de faire ressortir certains des liens qui existent entre le néo-libéralisme, le narcissisme et l’influence du travail, du loisir et de la culture de consommation sur l’actualisation de soi. En examinant le narcissisme en tant qu’instrument d’analyse personnelle et socio-psychologique,nous cherchons à comprendre les diverses façons dont le Soi, dans les sociétés néolibérales, se construit et s’épanouit à travers les interactions avec l’entreprise privée, laquelle promeut l’intérêt personnel et le succès sous forme de richesse, d’admiration et de perfection physique. Nous sommes d’avis que ce processus contribue à créer des identités narcissiques qui tentent de protéger le Soi contre la dégradation du travail dans les société néolibérales, et où l’angoisse, le sentiment de vide et d’isolement sont transformés en plaisir et trouvent leur guérison dans la consommation de loisir. En fin d’analyse, nous étudions plus à fond certains des liens entre le travail et le loisir narcissiques et la détresse et les troubles psychologiques.

Resumen

Este estudio tiene como objetivo de hacer resaltar algunos vínculos que existen entre el neoliberalismo, el narcisismo y la influencia del trabajo, del ocio y de la cultura del consumo sobre la autoactualización. Examinando el narcicismo como instrumento de análisis personal y sociosicológico, intentamos comprender las diversas maneras en que el Sí mismo, en las sociedades neoliberales, se construye y se expande a través de las interacciones con la empresa privada, que promueve el interés personal y el éxito bajo una forma de riqueza, de admiración y de perfección física. Somos del parecer que este proceso contribuye a crear identidades narcisistas que intentan proteger el Sí mismo contra la degradación del trabajo en las sociedades neoliberales, y donde la angustia, el sentimiento de vacío y de aislamiento son transformados en placer y encuentran su medicina en el consumo de actividades de ocio. Con el fin de un análisis, estudiamos más profundamente algunos vínculos entre el trabajo y el ocio narcisistas y la angustia y los trastornos sicológicos.
