Letter from the Editor

Today I would like to say more about the transition occurring in CMJ Solutions.

You will notice in this issue that we have published some errata that correct omissions and errors that were reported to us.We are grateful to the readers and contributors who reported the issues.

During this transition to a new editorial team for CMJ Solutions, we are discovering that some omissions and errors are occurring due to the multiple submission methods that our CMJ Solutions contributors use. In particular, we are finding that submissions sent previously by email (either to [email protected] or to the previous Solutions editor) sadly may have been lost.

We drafted the errata that appear in this issue before we realized the full scope of the problem. It is now clear that it is not feasible for the new CMJ Solutions editors to review such a large number of lost solutions. We are continuing to discuss for which problems we will be able to consider lost solutions.

In order to prevent future errors and omissions, and to ease the workload for the editors, we are introducing changes in how CMJ Solutions operates. For all future submissions, we ask that authors upload their solutions to Submittable, rather than sending them by email. This will make it much easier (and much less error prone) for the Solutions editors to keep track of and organize submissions. We encourage any author who has difficulty with the site to contact us at [email protected], so that we can assist you.

In addition, starting on July 1, 2024, Submittable will accept only two types of submissions: (1) both a .tex and .pdf file, or (2) a Microsoft Word document. We regret that we will no longer be able to accept a .pdf file without a corresponding .tex source file.

We are in the process of updating the introductory text to the CMJ Problems and Solutions column to reflect these changes.

I want to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to our new CMJ Solutions editors, Kate Thompson and Mátyás Sustik, for the time and expertise they have devoted to restoring CMJ Solutions to its usual schedule of publication and dealing with issues as they arise. They are a great team, and I am hopeful that the transition will be complete by the November 2024 issue of CMJ. I am also grateful to CMJ Problems editor Greg Oman, MAA Managing Editor Bonnie Ponce, and MAA Editorial Assistant Annie Petitt for everything they have done to assist Kate, Mátyás, and me.

Finally, thanks to all of you who contribute to CMJ Problems and Solutions. We look forward to your continued contributions.
