Editorial 2017 for Ocular Immunology and Inflammation

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the first edition of Ocular Immunology & Inflammation for 2017. As usual for this first edition of the year, I would like both to reflect on what we have achieved over the last 12 months and point to some highlights for the coming year.

Since we started in 2009 to select a “Disease of the Year,” we have covered various important disorders. Last year we have left the path of “Diseases” to focus on Diagnostics, namely “Multimodal Imaging in Uveitis.” My thanks go to the members of the OII Editorial Board who worked on this project, including Padmamalini Mahendradas, Soon Phaik Chee, Marc deSmet, Amod Gupta, Vishali Gupta, Quan D. Nguyen, André Romano, Miriam van Velthoven, and Daniel Vasconcellos-Santos. The concept of inviting various experts to summarize their experience in one review has proven to be quite valuable as it allows several experts to compare and consolidate their individual experiences.

For 2017 we want to switch back again to a classic ocular disorder, “Virus-induced Anterior Uveitis.” The editorial board will again consist of experts in this field, like Soon Phaik Chee (Singapore), Laure Caspers (Belgium), Mamta Agarwal (India), Jolanda de Groot and Aniki Rothova (The Netherlands), Phil Murray (UK), and Debra Goldstein (USA). Our knowledge has increased tremendously regarding these disorders during recent years, so it seems an opportune time to summarize various aspects of their diagnosis and management.

This year we will publish the first of a series of Supplements regarding the Epidemiology of Uveitis. The first part will analyze the Asian Pacific area and summarize the data from 14 countries.

Emmett Cunningham’s editorials, mostly in collaboration with one or more international experts, are now a regular, highly appreciated part of each issue. For that, I would like to thank both Emmett and our many collaborators.

Last, I would like to share with you the fact that OII’s impact factor has increased again significantly over the last year, from 1.972 to 2.481. This is the best opportunity to thank all contributors, reviewers, and reviewing editors for supporting this journal. I would encourage you, therefore, to submit your best work to OII so that we can continue to provide our readers with the highest quality articles and reviews from the field of ocular immunology and inflammation.

Thank you for your continuing support and Happy New Year!
