Abstract
Several studies have recently highlighted specific impairments in face processing in autistic subjects (memory for faces, recognition of emotional expressions, identity recognition of familiar faces). The goal of the present study was to explore whether there was a generalised face processing deficit in this population. A variety of tasks examining different, and possibly dissociative, aspects of face processing was investigated. The results of autistic subjects were compared with data from (a) a group of children with Down syndrome and (b) two individually matched control groups. The study suggests that autistic subjects are impaired in the various face processing tasks, but not always to the same extent.
