Statistical reviewing for disability and rehabilitation

Pages 515-521 | Accepted 01 Apr 2008, Published online: 07 Jul 2009

Abstract

Purpose. The general problem of ‘getting past the statistical referee’ has been recognised in many journals over a long period of time. The purpose of this article is to help authors in the review process, and to give the journal better statistical credentials.

Method. This is a reflection of 20 years of statistical reviewing for this and other journals, calling on the literature where appropriate.

Results. A number of criteria are listed that any statistician would expect authors to address. The statistician should not expect a statistical masterclass of all of them, but a recognition of the general problems posed.

Conclusions. By using these criteria authors should be better equipped to deal with statistical issues that might arise.
