Abstract
A sample of 36 chemically dependent men and women in outpatient recovery were interviewed to assess family patterns utilizing Bowen Family Systems Theory as the organizing framework. Significant patterns of conflict, cut-off, and triangulation were found. The majority of chemically dependent persons occupied at-risk sibling positions. Patterns of chemical dependence and substance abuse were identified acros generations of the families.
