This issue of Prehospital Emergency Care includes the 5,000th page of this journal. On behalf of the four associations that sponsor this journal, we are pleased andproud to congratulate PEC andits Editor-in-Chief, Dr. James J. Menegazzi, on reaching this landmark.

When the journal was launched by the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) andthe National Association of State EMS Directors (now the National Association of State EMS Officials) in 1997, it was with the intent of focusing on peer-reviewed research in prehospital care. While a number of other journals include research on prehospital issues, no U.S.-based journal has been solely dedicated to emergency medical services (EMS). The National Association of EMS Educators joined the list of sponsoring organizations in 1999, andthe National Association of EMTs joined in 2006. The four sponsoring organizations have a total of approximately 40,000 members from all aspects of EMS. Each organization contributes editorial board members andpeer reviewers, andwe thank these volunteers for their dedicated efforts in ensuring the quality of the work published in the journal. The editorial board members are listed on the masthead each issue, andour peer reviewers are listed at the end of this editorial, to acknowledge the work that they contribute (we apologize in advance if we have missed anyone, andplease let us know if we did).

The first issue (January/March 1997) contained six original research articles, two collective reviews, an NAEMSP position paper, andfour editorials. The founding editorial board consisted of 26 members; today's board boasts 61 members, including two of our Canadian colleagues, andmany of the “big names” in EMS research. Similarly, the authors who contribute to the journal are often quite recognizable. The journal has gradually expanded to include case conferences, “focus” sections (clusters of papers on related topics, such as cardiac arrest or airway management), andthe research abstracts from the NAEMSP annual meeting. The first volume contained a total of 312 pages; volume 11 (2007) contained 500.

A remarkable number of recent accomplishments highlight the more recent growth of the journal:

  • Our electronic manuscript submission andpeer-review management system was launched on March 31 of this year. This is greatly streamlining andsimplifying the manuscript handling process for the editorial office, the peer reviewers, andthe authors.

  • The first Spanish translation of the journal was published in February, with an initial press run of 3,000 copies for our European audience. Efforts are under way to replicate this for our Latin American colleagues.

  • The new Brain Trauma Foundation guidelines for the prehospital management of head injury were published as a supplement to PEC, highlighting our recognized role as the leader in the publication of the science of out-of-hospital care.

  • The electronic archive of past issues was completed late in 2007, now allowing for electronic access of all journal material back to Volume 1, Number 1.

We wish to congratulate Dr. Menegazzi, the entire editorial board, the peer reviewers, andour publishers at Informa on this important milestone.
