JA&WMA Recognizes Outstanding Peer Reviewers and Associate Editors

Maintaining the credibility of the peer review process is vitally important to professional journals, and the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (JA&WMA) is no exception. Hundreds of volunteer peer reviewers continue to help us each year, ensuring the high quality and integrity of JA&WMA. The peer reviewers, listed on pages 124–130, have provided objective and constructive comments on the manuscripts, which greatly improved the quality of the papers published in 2013. In keeping with JA&WMA’s longstanding tradition, this issue is dedicated to those peer reviewers. We thank all of you for your valuable time and effort in this cause, and look forward to adding to this list over the coming year.

I am especially pleased to report that we initiated a special recognition for outstanding reviewers in 2013. Several reviewers were recognized by A&WMA with a certificate of appreciation for their dedication and commitment to scientific excellence in reviewing the manuscripts submitted during 2012: Drs. Rajan Chakrabarty, Prakash Doraiswamy, Christopher Frey, John Irwin, Eduardo Olaguer, Will Ollison, Rick Saylor, Laura Venegas, Yan Wang, Sigrid Kusch, and Daniel Havey.

In addition to the contributions from peer reviewers, a dedicated group of eminently qualified Associate Editors continues to play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of JA&WMA. Their breadth of expertise provides more complete coverage in the science of air and waste management, bringing new diligence to the manuscript peer review and selection process. The Associate Editors are also key representatives of JA&WMA in their respective countries and disciplines, seeking out new topics of interest and potential special issues. This past year, we welcomed three new Associate Editors: Dr. Véronique Bouchet (Environment Canada, Canada), Dr. Valli Manickam (Administrative Staff College, India), and Dr. P. Steven Porter (University of Idaho, USA). JA&WMA’s Associate Editors are listed on the inside cover page of each issue.

In 2013, A&WMA established a prestigious new award named after Dr. Arthur C. Stern, former President of the Association and eminent scholar in the air pollution field, for those papers that have greatly advanced the air and waste management field through their publications in JA&WMA. A selection committee consisting of experts drawn from industry, government, and academia worked with the Editor-in-Chief in selecting papers that have contributed substantially to the environmental field through JA&WMA. Dr. William P.L. Carter, for his paper on ozone reactivity scales (JA&WMA, 44:7, 1994, pp. 881-899), received the inaugural Stern Award in 2013, and I am pleased to announce that Dr. Yonghua Yang has been selected for the 2014 Stern Award for his paper on controlling hydrogen sulfide (JA&WMA, 44:7, 1994, pp. 863-868). Dr. Yang will be honored during A&WMA's Annual Honors & Awards ceremony in Long Beach, CA, in June. Guidelines for nominations for the Arthur C. Stern Award are available online at http://www.tandfonline.com/uawm. I encourage you to submit your nominations to me at [email protected] for the 2015 Stern Award no later than September 15, 2014.
