Executive council of APSSAM 2006

Since the 3rd meeting of the APSSAM, held from 25–28 January 2005 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the APSSAM has participated in two major international conferences, with a successfully presented symposium at each of these.

The first was the 10th biennial meeting of the sister regional peak organization, the Asia Pacific Society for Sexual Medicine (APSSM), held from 4–8 October 2005 in the resort city of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. The APSSAM symposium, entitled ‘Men's health and aging in Asia Pacific countries’, was chaired by Victor Goh, with closing remarks by Apichat Kongkanand. The speakers (Hui Meng Tan, Han Sun Chiang, Sudhakar Krishnamurti, Akira Tsujimura and Thomas Hwang) described and discussed various men's health and aging issues in their respective countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The second was the 5th World Congress on the Aging Male, held from 9–12 February 2006 in Salzburg, Austria. The APSSAM symposium, presented on the first day of the congress, was entitled ‘The aging male in the Asia Pacific milieu’ and was co-chaired by Kew Kim Chew and Apichat Kongkanand. The presenters (Victor Goh, Thomas Hwang, Hui Meng Tan, Peter Lim, Young Chan Kim and Akira Tsujimura) covered topical issues ranging from prevalent health problems affecting the aging male in the Asia Pacific region, such as sexual dysfunction, late onset hypogonadism, prostate diseases and metabolic syndrome, to the use of phyto- and nutriceuticals for erectile dysfunction. A plea was made for a holistic and integrated approach to the management of aging, and for urgent research regarding the epidemiology and treatment of age-related diseases. The link between hypogonadism and metabolic syndrome was also discussed.

The 4th meeting of the APSSAM has been scheduled for 24–27 January 2007 in Bali, Indonesia. Details are available at the meeting website: http://apssam2007.urologi.or.id or e-mail: [email protected]
