Transgendered voice: considerations in case history management

Pages 14-18 | Published online: 11 Jul 2009

Abstract

Standard voice case history forms used by speech language pathologists do not appropriately address the needs of clients in the transgender process. A group of transgendered clients assisted the authors in identifying important considerations for effective interviewing and case history management. These considerations include: 1) appropriate interview terminology; 2) pragmatics in questioning; 3) knowledge of pre- and post-operative phases of treatment; 4) identification of voice treatment goals; 5) attitudes of family, friends and co-workers; 6) time-frame considerations for changes in gender role; 7) effects of medical intervention options on vocal function; 8) potential for negative clinician-bias; and 9) psychosocial factors. This report identifies items for effective interviewing and case history management.
