Processes influencing participation in the daily lives of immigrants living with polio in Sweden: A secondary analysis

ABSTRACT

This paper explores and describes conditions influencing participation in daily occupations and how these interact with each other, in the daily lives of immigrants with late effects of polio. A secondary analysis of interviews with 12 immigrants from Eastern Africa now residing in Sweden was performed, using a grounded theory approach to probe deeper into the complexity of the concept of participation. This study highlighted that participation occurs through a participation process, which was identified as the core category. It emerged that participation took place through a complex dynamic interaction of subprocesses that contributed to value and identity development. The five subprocesses influencing participation in daily life were based on participants striving to achieve mastery of daily occupations, meaning in daily life, connection to places and people, belonging to groups, and trust of others. The findings indicate the need for awareness of the complexity, when conditions for participation are in question. With a deep understanding of participation as an interactional process with socioemotional meaning, both the individual and sociopolitical aspects of participation became evident. The intersection of disability and migration could lead to disadvantages and social exclusion within this population. These factors warrant consideration on an individual, a political and a social level. Politically, structures preventing and enabling participation must be considered. Similarly, attention must be paid to the social, and underlying conditions must be created in everyday meetings.

Este estudio explora y describe las condiciones que influencian la participación en los desempeños diarios y cómo estos interactúan entre ellos en la vida cuotidiana de los inmigrantes con efectos tardíos de poliomielitis. Se realizó un segundo análisis de entrevistas a 12 inmigrantes del este de África que ahora residen en Suecia utilizando un enfoque de teoría fundamentada para probar en profundidad la complejidad del concepto de participación. Este estudio destaca que la participación ocurre mediante un proceso de participación, el cual se identificó como categoría principal. Resultó que la participación tiene lugar mediante un proceso influenciado por cinco subprocesos: una interacción dinámica compleja de subprocesos que contribuyó a valorar y desarrollar la identidad. Los cinco subprocesos que influenciaron la participación en la vida cuotidiana se basaron en los participantes esforzándose para conseguir el dominio en las ocupaciones cuotidianas, lo que significa en la vida cuotidiana, la conexión con los lugares y la gente, el sentimiento de pertenecer a un grupo y la confianza en los demás. Los resultados indican la necesidad de la sensibilización sobre esta complejidad, en lo que concierne a las condiciones de participación. Con una profunda comprensión de la participación como proceso de interacción con significado socioemocional, resultan evidentes los aspectos individuales y sociopolíticos de la participación. La intersección de la discapacidad y la migración podrían llevar a desventajas y exclusión social de esta población. Estos factores advierten de la consideración a nivel individual, político y social. Políticamente, son esenciales las estructuras que previenen y permiten la participación y estas deben ser consideradas, de igual modo que se debe prestar atención a las condiciones sociales y a las condiciones subyacentes en los encuentros cuotidianos.
