Hannah Arendt’s vita activa: A valuable contribution to occupational science

ABSTRACT

Occupational science is undergoing dynamic development and claims have been articulated that human occupation must be understood from multiple ontological standpoints. Hannah Arendt (1906–1975) is known for her work The Human Condition in which she explored human occupation from a philosophical and political standpoint. She distinguished the modalities labor, work and action, and labelled them vita activa. The aim of this paper is to present Arendt and her vita activa, in order to provide examples of its relevance for occupational science, showing how vita activa can assist occupational scientists to take a deeper perspective on human occupation. According to Arendt, human occupation is always conditioned. The condition for labor is necessity, which reflects human biological needs and represents the basics of life. The condition for work is utility, as something persistent and durable is produced. Action is the activity that takes place between people without the intermediary of things. Similar to occupational science, vita activa is concerned with human doing but their origins differ. Arendt also emphasized the public sphere as an arena for human occupation, a viewpoint that is shared with recent occupational science literature. The need to expand the scope of occupational science to encompass all aspects of human occupations, including the deleterious, has been expressed and vita activa can contribute to broadening this perspective. Examples of the need for sustainability in working life are also presented in this paper.

La ciencia ocupacional experimenta un desarrollo dinámico; en ese marco se han hecho afirmaciones en el sentido de que la ocupación humana debe ser comprendida desde distintas perspectivas ontológicas. Hannah Arendt (1906-1975), conocida por su obra La condición humana en la que examinó la ocupación humana desde una mirada filosófica y política, distinguió las modalidades de labor, trabajo y acción, etiquetándolas como vita activa. El objetivo del presente artículo se encamina a analizar a Arendt y su concepto de vita activa, con el fin de proporcionar ejemplos de su pertinencia para la ciencia ocupacional y evidenciar que puede impulsar a los científicos ocupacionales a indagar más profundamente en la ocupación humana. Según Arendt, ésta siempre se encuentra condicionada. La condición de la labor es la necesidad, toda vez que refleja las necesidades biológicas humanas y representa los aspectos básicos de la vida. La condición del trabajo es la utilidad, pues produce algo persistente y duradero. La acción es la actividad que se produce entre las personas sin la intermediación de las cosas. De manera similar a como ocurre en la ciencia ocupacional, la vita activa se interesa en el quehacer humano, aunque sus orígenes son distintos. Por otra parte, Arendt destacó el ámbito público como un escenario para el desarrollo de la ocupación humana, perspectiva que comparte la actual literatura sobre ciencia ocupacional. En este sentido, se ha manifestado la necesidad de ampliar el alcance de la ciencia ocupacional a fin de que abarque todos los aspectos relativos a las ocupaciones humanas, incluso aquellos que resultan perjudiciales. Al respecto, el concepto de vita activa puede coadyuvar a ampliar esta perspectiva. El artículo da cuenta de ejemplos que ponen en evidencia la necesidad de que la vida laboral sea sostenible.
