Belonging and quality of life as perceived by people with advanced cancer who live at home

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In a previous paper, we explored how people with advanced cancer experience occupational engagement and perceive quality of life; this pointed to the importance of doing things with and for others. These emerging findings resonate with the theoretical conceptualization of belonging within occupational science.

Purpose: To gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which perceived quality of life of people with advanced cancer who live at home may be associated with belonging, mediated through occupation.

Methods: Nine participants took part in this study which used a combination of semi-structured interviews and photo-elicitation to generate data. Data from 18 interviews and 77 photographs were analyzed thematically, drawing on four dimensions of belonging.

Findings: The findings highlight that maintaining engagement in occupations enables a sense of belonging which the participants associated with quality of life. Aspects related to the dimension of social belonging may become especially important when living with advanced cancer and isolation may constitute a potential barrier to experiencing a sense of belonging. Artefacts may also enable a sense of belonging and generate existential and spiritual feelings which may evoke concerns of impending death.

Introducción: En un artículo anterior examinamos cómo experimentan su participación ocupacional las personas con cáncer avanzado y cómo perciben su calidad de vida. Este ejercicio puso de manifiesto la importancia que reviste para dichas personas hacer algo con y por los demás. Tales hallazgos preliminares están en sintonía con la conceptualización teórica de pertenencia que hace la ciencia ocupacional.

Propósito: Lograr una comprensión más profunda de las maneras en que la calidad de vida percibida por personas con cáncer avanzado que viven en su hogar pueden estar asociadas con la pertenencia mediada por la ocupación.

Métodos: En este estudio participaron nueve personas. Para generar información se empleó una combinación de entrevistas semiestructuradas y entrevistas de foto estimulación. La información arrojada por 18 entrevistas y 77 fotografías fue analizada temáticamente, con base en las cuatro dimensiones de la pertenencia.

Hallazgos: Los hallazgos dan cuenta de que el involucramiento continuo en ocupaciones permite crear un sentimiento de pertenencia; para los participantes éste se encuentra asociado con la calidad de vida. Los aspectos relacionados con la dimensión de pertenencia social pueden llegar a ser especialmente importantes cuando uno vive con cáncer avanzado y el aislamiento puede llegar a constituirse en una barrera potencial que impida experimentar un sentido de pertenencia. Los artefactos también pueden posibilitar un sentimiento de pertenencia y generar sentimientos existenciales y espirituales, los cuales pueden evocar preocupaciones vinculadas con la inminencia de la muerte.
