A qualitative research synthesis of positive subjective experiences in occupation from the Journal of Occupational Science (1993–2010)

ABSTRACT

Meaning in occupation is an essential concept for occupational science because its presence is thought to foster human development, health, and well-being. We explored this concept using qualitative research synthesis and integrated 11 qualitative studies of meaning in occupation from the Journal of Occupational Science published between 1993 and 2010. Framework synthesis method guided data extraction and focused on identification of positive subjective experiences associated with occupation. Content analysis method guided interpretation of the framework synthesis data, from which a richly interconnected system of positive subjective experiences (forms of meaning) emerged, referred to as an occupational meaning system. The higher-order themes of Social, Selfhood, and Pleasure meanings were frequently linked together by their 12 underlying forms of meaning: belonging and helping (Social), autonomy, mastery, continuity, self-esteem, health and well-being, and purposes (Selfhood), and enjoyment, stimulating, and satisfaction (Pleasure). Study findings advance an understanding of the interrelated nature of multiple meanings associated with occupation. Use of an occupational meaning system can provide researchers a framework for the study of meaning and change in meaning in occupations nested within sociocultural contexts.

活动的意义是人类活动科学的一个基本概念，因为它的存在被认为可以促进人类的发展、健康和福祉。我们使用定性研究综合法来探索这一概念，并综合了在1993年至2010年期间发表在活动科学杂志中的关于活动的意义的11项定性研究。用框架综合方法来进行资料提取，重点是识别与活动相关的积极主观经验。用内容分析法来解释框架综合资料，从中出现了一个富有互联的积极主观体验（意义的形式）系统，称为活动意义系统。社会的、自我的和快乐的意义等高阶主题经常通过其12种基本形式的意义联系在一起：归属和帮助（社会的）、自主、掌握、连续性、自尊、健康和福祉、目的（自我）、享受、刺激和满足（快乐）。研究结果促进了了解与活动相关的多重意义之间的相互关联性。使用活动意义系统可以为研究人员提供一个框架，用于研究在社会文化背景下的活动的意义及其变化。

Para la ciencia ocupacional, el significado que tiene una ocupación en particular representa un concepto fundamental, ya que se cree que dicho significado fomenta el desarrollo humano, la salud y el bienestar. El presente artículo examina este concepto, partiendo de una síntesis de investigaciones cualitativas e integrando 11 estudios cualitativos que abordan el significado de la ocupación. Los mismos fueron publicados en la Journal of Occupational Science entre 1993 y 2010. Para la recopilación de datos se siguió el método de síntesis del marco conceptual; ésta se centró en identificar experiencias subjetivas positivas asociadas con la ocupación. Por su parte la interpretación de los datos de la síntesis del marco fue regida por el método de análisis de contenidos; de ello surgió un sistema de abundantes interconexiones entre experiencias subjetivas positivas (formas de significado), al que se llamó sistema de significados para la ocupación. Se comprobó que los significados de temas de orden superior —Social, Mismidad y Placer— frecuentemente estaban ligados mediante sus 12 formas de significado subyacentes: pertenecer y ayudar (Social), autonomía, dominio, continuidad, autoestima, salud y bienestar y propósitos (Mismidad), y gozo, estimulación y satisfacción (Placer). Los hallazgos del estudio contribuyen a profundizar la comprensión de la naturaleza interrelacionada de los múltiples significados asociados con la ocupación. El uso de un sistema de significados en la ocupación puede brindar a los investigadores un marco conceptual para el estudio del significado y su cambio en ocupaciones anidadas en ciertos contextos socioculturales.
