Scoping review of Asian viewpoints on everyday doing: A critical turn for critical perspectives

ABSTRACT

The notion that Western cultural values are embedded in occupational science and occupational therapy has received attention for over a decade. However, the extent to which non-Western perspectives on occupation have been represented remains unclear. This scoping review explored Asian perspectives on occupation (e.g., Asian migrants’ efforts to adapt to new surroundings in non-Asian countries, participation in occupations of Asian origin) published in English-medium occupational science and occupational therapy peer-reviewed journals from 2003 to 2016. The 26 articles that met the selection criteria addressed the following topics; participation in occupations of Asian origin and the consequent acculturation process, the individualist-collectivist tension found in many Asian societies, and how foundational values embedded within occupations of Asian origin critique the Western cultural biases present in key concepts such as health and well-being. Japanese and Indian perspectives (both migrant and ‘native’) on occupation occurred most frequently (among the 17 Asian countries represented), with an increasing number of publications over time. Results suggest that although some Asian perspectives have been discussed, more diverse perspectives are needed. If critical approaches towards occupational science and occupational therapy are to create socially responsive theories and practices in a globalizing world, non-Western viewpoints should be actively incorporated because they offer vantage points on occupation that may have been previously overlooked.

Durante más de una década se puso atención a la idea de que los valores culturales occidentales están integrados en la ciencia y la terapia ocupacionales. Sin embargo, no está claro hasta qué punto se representaron las visiones no occidentales sobre la ocupación. La presente revisión de alcance examinó las perspectivas asiáticas en torno a este tema (por ejemplo, los esfuerzos de los migrantes asiáticos para adaptarse a nuevos entornos en países no asiáticos, la participación en ocupaciones de origen asiático) publicadas entre 2003 y 2016 en revistas científicas en inglés sobre ciencia ocupacional y terapia ocupacional, revisadas por pares. Los 26 artículos que cumplieron los criterios de selección abordaban los siguientes temas: la participación en ocupaciones de origen asiático y el consiguiente proceso de aculturación; la tensión individualista-colectivista encontrada en muchas sociedades asiáticas; y la forma en que los valores fundamentales incorporados a las ocupaciones de origen asiático critican los sesgos culturales occidentales presentes en conceptos clave como salud y bienestar. Se comprobó que las perspectivas japonesas e indias sobre la ocupación (tanto de migrantes como “nativas”) se presentaron con mayor frecuencia (entre los 17 países asiáticos representados), constatándose un número creciente de publicaciones a lo largo del tiempo. Los resultados sugieren que, si bien se discutieron algunas perspectivas asiáticas, se necesitan perspectivas más diversas. Si los enfoques críticos de la ciencia y la terapia ocupacionales deben encaminarse a crear teorías y prácticas orientadas hacia lo social en un mundo globalizado, deberían incorporarse activamente los puntos de vista no occidentales, porque ofrecen puntos de vista sobre la ocupación que pueden haberse pasado por alto anteriormente.
