Rethinking home: Exploring older adults’ occupational engagement in senior cohousing

ABSTRACT

Global demographic trends and the current limitations of housing options for older adults mean new housing models are needed for this diverse population. Alternative ways of living, like senior cohousing, are emerging. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the home environment and occupational engagement for older adults living in a Swedish cohousing model. Using a critical realist lens and case study design, interviews were completed with eight older adult cohousing residents, as well as home observation and document analysis. Findings expand current insights about occupational engagement by revealing the importance of both individual and collective occupations and their interplay in senior cohousing. Residents’ accounts also suggest personal and occupational development in later life. Senior cohousing provides an innovative way of ‘aging-in-community’ that may be a piece of the housing solution in other western contexts, though further investigation of cultural and institutional factors is warranted.

Las tendencias demográficas globales y las limitaciones actuales en las opciones de vivienda para adultos mayores hacen que se necesiten nuevos modelos de vivienda para esta población tan diversa. Para dar respuesta a esta problemática están surgiendo formas de vida alternativas, como la covivienda para mayores. El presente estudio se propuso examinar la relación entre el entorno del hogar de los adultos mayores que viven en un modelo de covivienda sueco y su involucramiento en actividades ocupacionales. Utilizando una lente realista crítica y un diseño de estudio de caso, se realizaron entrevistas con ocho adultos mayores residentes en coviviendas, a lo que se sumó la observación en el hogar y el análisis de documentos. Los resultados permiten ampliar los conocimientos actuales sobre la participación ocupacional, evidenciando la importancia que poseen las ocupaciones individuales y colectivas y su interacción en la covivienda de personas mayores. Además, los relatos de los residentes aluden al desarrollo personal y ocupacional en la tercera edad. La covivienda para mayores ofrece una forma innovadora de “envejecer en comunidad”, que puede ser una parte de la solución habitacional en otros contextos occidentales, si bien se justifica una mayor investigación de los factores culturales e institucionales.
