Commentary on: Peters & Galvaan (2020) A scoping review exploring ‘opportunity’ in occupational science: Possibilities for conceptual development

ABSTRACT

Opportunity is an acknowledged, yet ‘taken-for-granted’ concept in occupational science, and specifically within occupational justice discourse. This paper presents a commentary on Peters and Galvaan’s (2020) scoping review on the conceptualization of opportunity within occupation-based disciplines. The commentary focuses on three points: The first is the lack of definitional clarity on key terms identified by the authors, highlighting a need for research to advance how opportunity is conceptualized. The second provides a response to the findings of the first theme; “Opportunity conceptualized as synonymous with capabilities”. Third, the commentary concludes by suggesting how the discipline of occupational science could expand on both the conceptualization and operationalization of opportunity, by introducing moral and political philosopher Axel Honneth’s (1992, 1995, 2001) ‘Theory of Recognition’, to conceptualize intrinsic and interpersonal recognition as a key precursor for opportunity as it relates to notions of equity, power, and justice.

La oportunidad es un concepto reconocido, aunque “dado por sentado”, en la ciencia ocupacional, y específicamente en el discurso sobre la justicia laboral. El presente artículo constituye un comentario en torno a la revisión de alcance que Peters y Galvaan (2020) realizan sobre la conceptualización de la oportunidad efectuada por las disciplinas basadas en la ocupación. El mismo se centra en tres puntos. El primero tiene que ver con la falta de claridad en la definición de los términos clave identificados por los autores; ello pone de relieve la necesidad de investigar para profundizar en la conceptualización de lo que se entiende por “oportunidad”. El segundo proporciona una respuesta a las conclusiones del primer tema: “la oportunidad conceptualizada como sinónimo de capacidades”. Finalmente, el comentario concluye con el tercer punto, sugiriendo cómo la disciplina de la ciencia ocupacional podría ampliar tanto la conceptualización como la operacionalización de la oportunidad. En este sentido, hace referencia a la “teoría del reconocimiento” concebida por el filósofo moral y político Axel Honneth (1992, 1995, 2001), para conceptualizar el reconocimiento intrínseco e interpersonal como precursor clave de la oportunidad respecto a las nociones de equidad, poder y justicia.

RÉSUMÉ

L'opportunité est un concept reconnu mais « tenu pour acquis » dans les sciences de l'occupation et plus spécifiquement dans les discours sur la justice occupationnelle. Cet article présente un commentaire sur l’étude de la portée de Peters et Galvaan (2020) sur la conceptualisation de l'opportunité dans les disciplines basées sur l'occupation. Le commentaire se focalise sur trois points : le premier est le manque de clarté dans la définition des mots-clés identifiés par les auteures, ce qui souligne la nécessité d'une recherche pour faire progresser la manière dont l'opportunité est conceptualisée. Le second point apporte une réponse aux conclusions du premier thème, à savoir « l'opportunité conceptualisée comme synonyme de capabilités ». Troisièmement, le commentaire conclut en suggérant la manière dont la discipline des sciences de l'occupation pourrait se développer à la fois dans la conceptualisation et l'opérationnalisation de l'opportunité, en introduisant la « théorie de la reconnaissance » du philosophe moral et politique Axel Honneth (1992, 1995, 2001), afin de conceptualiser la reconnaissance intrinsèque et interpersonnelle comme un précurseur clé de l'opportunité, elle-même liée aux notions d’équité, de pouvoir et de justice.
