Study on spatial evolution of geographical names in Tongzhou Canal settlements

ABSTRACT

This study takes the geographical names of Tongzhou Canal settlements as the objects, and analyses the spatial evolution laws of and formation reasons for the geographical names of Tongzhou Canal settlements with the nearest neighbour index, kernel density and buffer method. Tongzhou was born and prospered because of the canal. The study shows that in history, the geographical names of Tongzhou Canal settlements were born along the canal and gathered because of grain transporting wharf, while in the new era, the geographical names are guided by the grain transporting culture and gathered near the old town of Tongzhou.
