Reassessment of cochlear dead regions in hearing-impaired teenagers with severe-to-profound hearing loss

Abstract

The aim of this study was to reassess cochlear dead regions after an interval of twelve months, using the Threshold Equalising Noise (TEN) test. Thirty-four ears of 24 teenagers (mean age of 14 years) with longstanding severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing impairment were tested. Testing was repeated after an interval of 12 months using the same experimental set-up. A total of eight (23.5%) out of 34 ears changed category on retest: this decreased to two (7.1%) out of 27 ears when the inconclusive category was removed from the analysis. In both of these ears (of the same participant) the criteria were met at a single frequency, and the masked threshold was only 10 dB above the TEN level per ERB_N. When all of the data were examined on a frequency-by-frequency basis, the instances that changed category ranged from 15 to 51%. The range decreased to between 4 and 34% when the inconclusive category was removed from the analysis.

El propósito de este estudio fue re-evaluar las regiones cocleares muertas luego de un intervalo de 12 meses, utilizando la prueba de ruido de umbral ecualizado (TEN). Se evaluaron treinta y cuatro oídos de 24 adolescentes (edad media de 14 años) con trastornos auditivos sensorineurales severos a profundos de larga evolución. La evaluación fue repetida luego de un intervalo de 12 meses utilizando el mismo diseño experimental. Un total de ocho (23.5%) de los 34 oídos cambiaron de categoría al ser re-evaluados: esto disminuyó a 2 (7.1%) de 27 oídos, cuando la categoría no concluyente fue removida del análisis. En ambos oídos (del mismo participante) los criterios fueron cumplidos en una sola frecuencia, y el umbral enmascarado fue sólo 10 dB por encima del nivel TEN para ERB_N. Cuando todos los datos fueron examinados, frecuencia por frecuencia, los casos que cambiaron de categoría variaron del 15 al 51%: el rango disminuyó entre 4 y 34% cuando la categoría no concluyente fue removida del análisis.
