A Year in Review: 2023

Dear Reader,

With the beginning of a new year, I would like to reflect on 2023 and the growth of the Journal of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy (JPPCP) over the past 12 months. The continued success of the journal is a testament to the dedicated efforts of JPPCP’s scholarly community. This year, the journal saw a steady growth in new peer reviewers and authors as well as continued support from prior reviewers and editorial board members. To acknowledge the work of peer reviewers in 2023, a list of reviewer names has been published online. Thank you to all peer reviewers—past and present—for your valued professional service.

It is with excitement that I share details of the journal’s performance in 2023. The number of manuscript submissions to JPPCP continues to grow. A total of 88 manuscripts were submitted to the journal in 2023, with an acceptance rate of 43%. In 2023, JPPCP achieved 59,897 article downloads, a 28% increase over 2022. With journal usage in 2023 exceeding that of recent years (2016–2022), it is evident that JPPCP’s readership is expanding. The journal boasts readers and authors from around the globe, including North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. To date, the most read articles from 2023 are:

It is with sincere gratitude that I thank authors for choosing the Journal of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy for submission of their work and joining in the effort to disseminate evidence-based knowledge of pain and palliative care pharmacotherapy. In 2024, JPPCP will also highlight non-pharmacological approaches as adjuncts to pharmacotherapy in the Special Issue “Integrative Approaches to Pain and Palliative Care.” To learn more about the Special Issue or to submit a manuscript, please visit: https://think.taylorandfrancis.com/special_issues/journal-pain-palliative-care/.

The deadline for manuscript submission is March 15, 2024.

In 2024, I would also like to reinvigorate the “Narratives in Pain” section of the journal and encourage submissions from readers and their patients (or loved ones). In addition to physical pain, patients with chronic pain or advanced illness often suffer from existential or psychological pain. If writing one’s story could alleviate some suffering, even in the slightest, please allow the Journal of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy to be a tool for managing the intangibles in pain and the grief of living with pain or advanced illness. If you have questions, ideas, or would like to submit a piece for this section, please reach out to me at [email protected].

Created in 2022, the Residency Corner under the direction of Section Editor Mandy Mullins continues to showcase the work of trainees. Residents and fellows are encouraged to submit their original research, reviews, and reflections by selecting the “Residency Corner” as the subject section in the author submission portal. Authors need not be in training at the time of manuscript writing; however, the research should reflect a project begun in the training year. Special to the Q3 (September) issue each year, outgoing residents or fellows are invited to submit a “Words of Advice” reflection addressed to incoming trainees. Submissions are due July 1, 2024.

JPPCP welcomes new peer reviewers to join the journal’s scholarly community in 2024. To support new (and experienced) peer reviewers, a series of “Peer Review Q & A” editorials were published in the journal in 2023 and are available as free access articles:

Before concluding, I would like to recognize the dedicated members of JPPCP’s Editorial Office—Katy Dillon (Portfolio Manager), Ashley Indelicato (Peer Review Specialist), and Kate Monahan (Production Editor). I would also like to express earnest appreciation for our readers; without you, the success of JPPCP would not be possible.

Thank you all for making 2023 a great year. Best wishes in 2024!
