Tinnitus suffering: some medical aspects

Abstract

We have over the last 15 years seen some important developments in our understanding of tinnitus generation, the distress it can lead to, and more importantly how it can be mitigated. The neurophysiological model introduced by Jastreboff (1) has provided us with a model where the central nervous system is the main factor in tinnitus suffering, and subsequently also central to the rehabilitation of the patients. This paper addresses the medical aspect of tinnitus suffering in general, and presents an introduction to the kind of information with which we provide our patients as part of rehabilitation.
