Paralympics Should be Integrated into Main Olympic Games

Abstract

Paralympic Games (PG), involving people with disabilities (PWD), are a manifestation of excellence in sport. They show that athletics performed by PWD counts as genuine sport. They also support a wider meaning of the term ‘health,’ understood not just like a utopian state of perfection, but like the ability to realize oneself in the projects and activities of one’s own choosing. Notwithstanding these virtues, PG—in their current form—may paradoxycally reinforce social prejudice against PWD. This is due to the fact that PG and Olympic Games (OG) are now two distinct events. In this article, I argue that PG should be integrated in the OG, just like women’s and ‘minor’ sports, because the separation of PG and OG indicates a morally arbitrary separation between people with and without disabilities. I also propose to remove the word ‘Para-lympic’ because it stigmatizes the sport performed by PWD as an appendix of ‘normal’ sport. Athletes with disabilities deserve special attention because they have special needs; but they also deserve an arena where their excellence is offered to the public, and this arena should not be different from that of normal-bodied athletes.

Les jeux paralympiques (JP), impliquant des personnes handicapées (PH), sont une manifestation de l'excellence dans le sport. Ils montrent que l'athlétisme effectué par les personnes handicapées compte comme un véritable sport. Ils soutiennent aussi au sens plus large un sens du mot « sante », entendu non pas comme un état utopien de perfection, mais comme la possibilité de se réaliser dans les projets et activités de son propre choix. Sans compromettre ces vertus, les JP – dans leur forme actuelle – pourraient paradoxalement renforcer le préjudice social contre les PH. Ceci est du au fait que les JP pourraient être intègres aux Jeux Olympiques comme les sports des femmes et les sports mineurs, parce que la séparation des JP et des JO témoigne d’une séparation arbitraire morale entre les gens avec et sans handicap. Je propose aussi de retirer le mot « paralympique » parce que cela stigmatise le sport pratique par les PH comme une annexe du sport normal. Les sportifs avec un handicap méritent une attention particulière parce qu’ils ont des besoins spéciaux, mais ils méritent une scène ou leur excellence est offerte au public, et cette scène ne devraient pas être différente des sportifs au corps normal.

Die Paralympischen Spiele, an denen Menschen mit Behinderung beteiligt sind, stellen eine Manifestation sportlicher Exzellenz dar. Sie zeigen, dass Leichtathletik, die von Menschen mit Behinderung gemacht wird, als genuine Sportart angesehen wird. Sie unterstützen darüber hinaus eine breitere Bedeutung des Begriffs ‚Gesundheit‘, der nicht nur als ein utopischer Zustand der Perfektion, sondern als die Fähigkeit verstanden wird, sich in eigens gewählten Projekten und Aktivität zu realisieren. Dieser Tugenden zum Trotz könnte es sein, dass die Paralympischen Spiele – in ihrer heutigen Form – paradoxerweise soziale Vorurteile gegen Menschen mit Behinderung verstärken. Dies liegt an der Tatsache, dass die Paralympischen und die Olympischen Spiele nun zwei klar getrennte Veranstaltungen sind. In diesem Artikel plädiere ich dafür, das die Paralympischen Spiele in die Olypischen Spiele integriert werden sollten, genau wie dies der Fall bei Frauen- und Jugendsport ist, weil die Trennung dieser Veranstaltungen eine moralisch willkürliche Unterscheidung zwischen Menschen mit und ohne Behinderung markiert. Zudem schlage ich vor, dass der Zusatz ‚Para-lympisch’ entfernt wird, weil er den Sport, der von Menschen mit Behinderung ausgeführt wird, als einen Zusatz gegenüber dem ‚normalen‘ Sport stigmatisiert. Sportler mit Behinderung verdienen zwar besondere Aufmerksamkeit, weil sie besondere Bedürfnisse haben, aber sie verdienen auch eine Plattform, auf der ihre Exzellenz der Öffentlichkeit gezeigt wird, und diese Plattform sollte nicht eine andere als die für nichtbehinderte Sportler sein.

Los Juegos Paralímpicos (JJ.PO), referidos a las personas con discapacidad (PDs), son un ejemplo de excelencia en el deporte. Nos muestran que deportes practicados por PDs cuentan como deportes genuinos. Estos también defienden un sentido más amplio del término “salud,” entendido no sólo como un utópico estado de perfección, sino como la habilidad de realizarse a uno mismo a través de los proyectos que cada uno ha elegido. A pesar de estas virtudes, los JJ.PP—en su estado actual—pueden paradójicamente reforzar prejuicios contra GCD. Esto se debe al hecho de que los JJ.PP y los Juegos Olímpicos (JJ.OO) son dos eventos distintos. En este artículo, defiendo que los JJ.PP deberían ser integrados en los JJ.OO, de igual modo que los deportes de mujeres y los minoritarios, porque la separación entre JJ.PP y JJ.OO muestra una separación moralmente arbitraria entre personas con y sin discapacidad. También propongo eliminar la palabra “Para-olímpico” porque estigmatiza el deporte practicado por las PDs como un apéndice del deporte normal. Los atletas con discapacidad merecen una especial atención porque tienen necesidades especiales; pero también merecen un lugar dónde su excelencia sea ofrecida al público, y este lugar no debería ser diferente al de los atletas sin discapacidad.
