Notes

1 The original German text, written by the performer Christiane Kuehl, is ‘Zählen, nicht erzählt werden’. It plays on the many meanings of the root word ‘zählen’, which means ‘to count’ but also forms part of ‘erzählen’ which means ‘to tell, to narrate’ (as in a story).

A more literal translation would be, ‘We count, instead of being related in someone else’s narrative’.

2 The quantified-self movement extolls the value of using digital technology to measure, record and chart personal health and body information.

3 The title is taken from the New Testament: ‘Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows’ (Luke 12:7) (New International Version). It seemed to us to mirror the main notion of self-quantifiers that a full accounting has positive effects.

5 ‘Anonymous P.’ premiered at Theaterhaus Gessnerallee in Zürich, Switzerland in July 2014. The doublelucky productions website includes a link: https://doubleluckyproductions.org/anonymous-p/.

6 ‘You Are Out There’ premiered at Kunstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt am Main, Germany in 2016. The doublelucky productions website includes a link: https://doubleluckyproductions.org/you-are-out-there/.

7 The devices were built by Grzegorz Zajac using an ESP-8266 32bit microcontroller with integrated WIFI and an optical heart rate sensor.

8 She used a Fitbit Alta HR tracking watch, which can be used to track sleep stages. This data can be used to create sleep cycle charts using the app on the Fitbit website.

Chris Kondek

Chris Kondek has been making video for theater for over 25 years. He started in New York in the beginning of the 90's creating video for the multimedia performance company The Wooster Group. In the middle of the 90's he started a long collaboration with Laurie Anderson co-creating visuals for and touring with her performance pieces “Stories from the Nerve Bible” and “Songs and Stories from Moby Dick”. In the end of 90's he created video for the New York multimedia performance group, “The Builder's Association”. In 1999 Chris Kondek re-located to Berlin where he has been continually active in the German Theater and Opera scene.

Starting in 2003, working with longtime collaborator Christiane Kuehl, Chris Kondek has been making theater works in the independent scene. The first work “Dead Cat Bounce” created in 2004 used the audience's money to trade stocks live during the performance on the New York Stock exchange. This piece, along with the follow up work “Money: It Came from Outer Space” 2007 were both invited to the “Festival Politik im Freien Theater.” Both works were awarded the jury prize of the Goethe institute.

In 2014 Kondek and Kuehl re-branded forming the multimedia/multi format artist group doublelucky productions. doublelucky concentrates on creating works that put focus on current technological trends in society in order to make visible our invisible digital infrastructures.

Most recently Kondek and doublelucky productions have been investigating the use of Augmented Reality to question the meaning of “real” experience in our digital world.
