Abstract
Engagement is important in the treatment of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. With a few notable exceptions, most conceptualizations of engagement view it as attendance in sessions. Although there has been discussion about engagement in AOD treatment, there has not been a conceptualization of engagement specifically for group work, a widely used modality for AOD treatment, until recently. This article reviews the research evidence to date on the multidimensional Group Engagement Measure (GEM), a reliable and valid instrument suitable for AOD treatment groups.
