Celebrating 20 years of Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Patents

Page i | Published online: 20 Dec 2009

Dear Reader,

This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Patents (EOTP). For two decades EOTP has offered a bird’s eye view of the latest advances in the discovery of therapeutically promising molecules. Through scientific and regulatory evolution and an ever expanding wealth of peer-reviewed literature, EOTP’s distinct approach and relevance have stood the test of time.

EOTP was launched with the aim of filling a gap in the scientific literature by explicitly including patents within the scope of its review articles. Despite being largely accessible through public databases, key information is often hard to extract from patents and alone they do not provide insight into emerging trends or patterns. EOTP’s reviews, written by key opinion leaders in the field, provide a direct line to essential patent information and trends by summarising dozens of patents, putting them into context, and expressing the authors’ personal opinion on their therapeutic implication.

Last year was a significant year for EOTP, principally with the news of its acceptance for Medline indexing. Readership continues to grow and the Editorial team would like to extend their thanks to all of our authors for their contributions over the last 20 years, which have led to the continuing success of this journal.

Looking ahead to 2010, following consultation with our readers and Editorial Board, our abstract structure has been redesigned to better reflect the content of the article and each article will now feature an ‘article highlights’ box to guide the reader through the main points of the paper. Later in the year we are also looking forward to an issue looking at recent antibacterial development, guest-edited by Dr Herbert Kirst, who has supported the journal on its Editorial Board since its early days.

We hope this agenda meets our readers’ expectations and that EOTP will remain, above all, a useful resource to professionals in the field.
