Australia's Better Access initiative: still awaiting serious evaluation?

Declaration of interest; IBH was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of beyondblue: the national depression initiative during the development and early implementation of the 2001-03 BOiMHC program. He also led the development of the earlier SPHERE: a national depression project, which was supported by the NHMRC, the National Mental Health Strategy and as outlined in the original publications (Med J Aust 2001; 175 Suppl Jul 16) a series of pharmaceutical companies, most notably Bristol-Myers Squibb and subsequently Pfizer Australia. SR was Deputy CEO of the Mental Health Council of Australia (MHCA) during the period 2005-09. IBH, SR and TAD were part of a consortium led by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, which included the MHCA and Brain & Mind Research Institute that tendered unsuccessfully for the evaluation of the Better Access initiative.
