Abstract
The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe the clinical manifestations and ophthalmological differential diagnosis of sphenoid ridge meningiomas. It included 49 patients diagnosed sphenoid ridge meningioma between October 2000 and July 2007. In this study, clinical manifestations of ophthalmological symptoms led to a misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis in 16 cases. The most frequent initial presentations were ophthalmological symptoms, including proptosis, visual acuity loss, ocular motor palsy, eyelid swelling, and conjunctival oedema. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging showed typical features of sphenoid ridge meningiomas. Therefore, to avoid misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of sphenoid ridge meningiomas, ophthalmologists should raise awareness of ophthalmological features of this type of lesion and use appropriate imaging protocols on patients with unexplained and progressive visual loss.
