The authors regret that in the above article they omitted to cite the source of some of the literature reviewed. As a result of this error, sections of the original article should be reformulated as follows:

The sentences below are under the heading Phonological acquisition among Malay children on page 331:

“However, there is a dearth of studies that focus on Malay phonological development. Thus far, only four studies have been conducted to investigate Malay phonological acquisition among Malay children in terms of age of consonantal acquisition and consonant error patterns (Badrulzaman, Lim, & Sandra, 1999; Kartini, 1991; Nor Azizah, 1999; Norhaizan, 2005). These studies however, are limited in scope with regards to selection of participants, methodological aspects and analysis.”

Should read:

“However, there is a dearth of studies that focus on Malay phonological development. In this section, the description of the previous local studies of Malay phonological acquisition is based on the pioneering collective critical review provided by Lim (2010). Lim reviewed small-scale works done by herself, her colleagues and her students in the first Speech Sciences Programme of Malaysia. According to Lim (2010), thus far, only four studies have been conducted to investigate Malay phonological acquisition among Malay children in terms of age of consonantal acquisition and consonant error patterns (Badrulzaman, Lim, & Sandra, 1999; Kartini, 1991; Nor Azizah, 1999; Norhaizan, 2005). And as Lim (2010) has mentioned, these studies however, are limited in scope with regards to selection of participants, methodological aspects and analysis.”

The sentence:

“In addition, the targeted words used to elicit speech from the children were not well-explained in the studies. For instance, linguistic aspects such as vowel and syllable structures were not detailed. Another shortcoming of these studies was the criteria used in the analyses.”

Should read:

“In addition, as Lim (2010) has criticised, the targeted words used to elicit speech from the children were not well-explained in the studies. For instance, linguistic aspects such as vowel and syllable structures were not detailed. Another shortcoming of these studies, as pointed out by Lim (2010), was the criteria used in the analyses.”

The sentence:

“The overall findings of the above studies indicated that the consonants acquired by age 2 years were /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /ʔ/, /m/, /n/, /ә/, /ŋ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /w/ and /j/.”

Should read:

“Lim (2010) compiled and scrutinised the data from the above four local studies and yielded the first chart of approximate age of consonantal acquisition and accumulative error patterns from 2–4 years. According to Lim (2010), the overall findings of the above studies indicated that the consonants acquired by age 2 years were /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /ʔ/, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /w/ and /j/.”

The sentence:

“Therefore, it is imperative that a larger cross-sectional study should be conducted incorporating more information about critical considerations in methodological aspects such as sampling procedures as well as methods of analyzing and reporting the results.”

Should read:

“Therefore, as suggested by Lim (2010), it is imperative that a larger cross-sectional study should be conducted incorporating more information about critical considerations in methodological aspects such as sampling procedures as well as methods of analyzing and reporting the results.”

The sentences below are under the heading Discussion on page 339:

“The findings of the present study were parallel to those of previous small scale cross-sectional studies of Malay which found that by the age of 4 years, Malay children mastered all the primary consonants in Malay (Badrulzaman et al., 1999; Kartini, 1991; Nor Azizah, 1999; Norhaizan, 2005).”

Should read:

“The findings of the present study were parallel to those of previous small scale cross-sectional studies of Malay reviewed by Lim (2010), which found that by the age of 4 years, Malay children mastered all the primary consonants in Malay (Badrulzaman et al., 1999; Kartini, 1991; Nor Azizah, 1999; Norhaizan, 2005).”

The authors acknowledge fully the importance of Lim’s work and apologize for any misunderstanding.
