This study was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of the University of Tokyo. Anesthesia induction was performed with intramuscularly administered xylazine (2 mg/kg, Seractal, Bayer Co., Tokyo, Japan), pentobarbital (15 mg/kg, Somnopentil, Kyoritsu Seiyaku Co., Tokyo). Subsequently, the animals were intubated and artificially ventilated with halothane (Fluothane, Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., Osaka, Japan) and oxygen. All surgical procedures were performed with general anesthesia with aseptic techniques. Intravenous potassium chloride (2 mmol/kg; KCL, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Tokyo) was used as the euthanasia agent during general anesthesia.
