Abstract

In this study, the utility of Absidia griseolla var. igachii PTCC 5260 and Acremonium chrysogenum 5271 in progesterone biotransformation was investigated. Microbial hydroxylation of progesterone by A. griseolla produced two hydroxylated pregnane-like steroids. The metabolites were purified and characterized using spectroscopic methods and identified as 14α-hydroxyprogesterone (2) and 11α,6β-dihydroxyprogesterone (3). Biotransformation by Acremonium chrysogenum led to the formation of 14α-hydroxyprogesterone with excellent yield.
