Abstract

Although “cannabis-induced delusional disorder” is recognized in DSM-in-R and appears as “cannabis psychotic disorder” in the draft criteria for DSM-TV, little information on this entity is available. The authors reviewed available studies of psychiatric syndromes attributed to cannabis use and then surveyed 9,432 admissions at two psychiatric centers, seeking cases of cannabis-induced disorders. The literature review found inadequate evidence to be certain that cannabis alone can produce a psychotic syndrome in previously asymptomatic individuals. The chart review produced no convincing cases of a cannabis-induced psychotic syndrome. The authors conclude that further research is needed to validate the diagnosis of cannabis psychosis.
