Abstract

Background: Transient osteoporosis of the hip [TOH] is a rare clinical syndrome with an unknown pathogenesis. Clinical history and radiological investigations establish the diagnosis. Conservative management is the mainstay of treatment. Presented here is the conservative management of two cases of men with TOH.

Findings: Magnetic resonance imaging and bone scan showed changes consistent with TOH, which resolved after initiation of treatment.

Conclusion: Transient osteoporosis of the hip needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of hip joint pain in middle-aged men with a functional disability. Prompt initial clinical evaluation with vigilant monitoring and follow-ups are a must to identify and treat complications.
