Marijuana Use Effects

The Lasting Effects of Marijuana Use on Educational Attainment in Midlife

Pages 554-597 | Published online: 08 Feb 2010

Abstract

Data from the NLSY79, a U.S. nationally representative longitudinal survey of labor market behavior, sponsored and directed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor, was used to assess the influence of marijuana use on educational attainment (N == 7,724). Multivariate nested OLS models assessed the associations of marijuana use in 1979, 1984, and 1998 with educational attainment in 2002. Adolescent, frequent, and persistent users experienced lower attainment at ages 37 to 45 than nonusers even when use was confined to adolescence. Implications of the findings, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Notes

1These traits were, in part, inattentiveness, inability to concentrate, uncooperativeness, lack of curiosity, the likelihood to give up easily, immobilization under stress, and having low performance standards.

2 That is not to imply that delayed educational attainment is not a problem in the United States for individuals or for society. Young, single, undereducated mothers may experience sustained hardship while they struggle for many years to provide for their children. During that period they may rely on government and family subsidies. The fact that many of them ultimately achieve on par with women whose paths to educational success were easier is a testament to their tenacity, sense of purpose, and belief in the power of institutionalized education to provide opportunities for socioeconomic success.

3 Preliminary analysis suggested that although statistically significant differences between females and males in educational attainment were found for 1979 through 1984 and 1996 through 2002, substantive differences were extremely small, never reaching even a half-year of education. Accordingly, gender was included as a control variable.
