The Effects of Alcohol Dependence on the Quality of Life and Sex Life of Women

Abstract

Background: Alcohol dependence is a multi-dimensional and chronic disorder which affects the physical, psychological, social, sexual health and thus the quality of life of the individual. Objectives: This research was designed in order to determine the effect of alcohol dependence on the quality of life and sexual life of women. Methods: The research was a cross-sectional and comparative relation study, consisting of a case study group constituted of women who consulted Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Disorders Training and Research Hospital's Alcohol and Substance Research, Treatment, Education Center between July 2009 and July 2010 and who were diagnosed as alcohol addicted and a healthy group, constituted of women who consulted the Gynecology Clinic of the same hospital (alcohol dependent group = 71, healthy group = 183). The data were collected using ‘World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale Brief Form’ (WHOQOL-BREF TR), Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Data were analyzed by percentage, mean, chi-square, student's t-test, and multivariate analysis by use of SPSS 13.0 program. Results: It was determined that the alcohol-dependent women presented lower WHOQOL-BREF-TR sub-dimensions and lower FSFI total scores and sub-dimensions but higher scores in BDI scale in comparison to the healthy group. Conclusions: The alcohol dependence negatively affects the quality of life and sexual life in women.

Melike Dişsiz

Melike Dişsiz, who was born in 1978 in Ula District of Muğla city, has finished the Vocational School of Health, Muğla in 1996 and graduated from the Bakırköy School of Health, Istanbul University in 2002. She has worked as an obstetrician in the Artvin city in between 1997 and 1998. She has been working as a nurse in Alcohol-Substance Research, Treatment and Education Center (ASRTEC) at Bakirkoy Resesarch and Training Hospital for Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery since 1998. She has completed her master's degree education at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, Florence Nightingale School of Nursing, Istanbul University in 2007 and finished her doctoral study in the same institution in 2011. Her main academic areas of interests are perinatology, reproductive health, sexual health and alcohol/substance addiction.

Nezihe Beji

Nezihe Beji, who was born in 1964 in Diyarbakır city, has graduated from Florence Nightingale School of Nursing, Istanbul University in 1985. She has worked as a nurse at the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, Istanbul University in between 1984 and 1986 and completed her master's degree education in 1987. She has worked as a research assistant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, Branch of nursing in health occupation high-school of Elazığ, Fırat University in between 1986 and 1990 and worked as Head Nurse in Surp Agop Armenian Catholic Hospital in between 1990 and 1991. She has worked as a research assistant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, Florence Nightingale School of Nursing, Istanbul University in between 1991 and 1996 and received Ph.D. degree from the same institute in 1994. She had the titles, Assistant Professor in 1996, Associate Professor in 1999 and Professor in 2005. She has been holding the title: Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, Florence Nightingale School of Nursing, Istanbul University since 2002. Her main academic areas of interests are uro-gynecology, infertility, sexual health, gynecologic oncology and reproductive health. She has a large number of papers published in these subjects.

Ümran Oskay

Ümran Oskay, who was born in 1965 in Istanbul city, has graduated from Florence Nightingale School of Nursing, Istanbul University in 1987. She has worked as a nurse at the gynecology services of the International Hospital in between 1987 and 1992. She has started to work as a research assistant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, Florence Nightingale School of Nursing, Istanbul University in 1993 and completed master's education in 1995 and received Ph.D. degree in 2001. She has been carrying out Assistant Professorship at the same institution since 2004. Her main academic areas of interests are perinatology, menopause and sexual health. She has a large number of papers published in these subjects.
