Effect of diethyl phthalate on biochemical indicators of carp liver tissue

Pages 21-27 | Received 20 May 2014, Accepted 22 Aug 2014, Published online: 19 Sep 2014

Abstract

This study aims to elucidate the diethyl phthalate (DEP) effects on the biochemical indicators of carp liver. Water and Tween 80 were used as control groups. We found that DEP exposure can influence carp liver superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPH-PX) activities and the capabilities of carp anti-anion and anti-superoxide hydroxyl radicals. DEP also damages the carp antioxidant defense system and results in the occurrence of membrane lipid peroxidation. A certain concentration of DEP can damage the antioxidant defense system in fish liver, destroy liver cells and affect the energy metabolism and metabolic processes in the fish body.
