Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors in the Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Pages 173-181 | Received 13 Jun 1990, Published online: 04 Dec 2011

Abstract

Studies in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have shown that potent serotonin reuptake inhibitors (e.g., clomipramine and fluvoxamine) are effective anti-obsessive compulsive treatments, whereas antidepressant drugs that are not potent blockers of serotonin reuptake are generally ineffective in reducing symptoms of OCD. In addition to briefly reviewing these findings, issues in the selection of appropriate pharmacological management of OCD are discussed.
