Summary
Cytological and histological characteristics of 52 patients seen because of an abnormal smear in pregnancy were reviewed. The results of antenatal cytology were associated closely with those of postpartum cytology. No cases of antenatal cytology demonstrating changes more severe than mild dyskaryosis reverted to normal postnatally, but in eight patients the abnormality became more severe. None of these patients subsequently developed an invasive lesion. Ten patients were not treated after delivery as their smears reverted to normal. One of these subsequently developed abnormal cytology requiring further investigation. Cytological changes related to wart virus lesions did not accurately predict the histological occurrence of such changes.
