- Butyrate salts have interesting antitumor properties since they are able to inhibit cellular DNA synthesis and promote cellular differentiation. When associated to interferon these effects are significantly augmented. Because their short lifetime in the organism, we and others proposed the use of n-butyrate esters as prodrugs.3–5 Further improvments in the antitumor potency were obtained using certain amino acids such as Aib.6
