The lack of the β-glycol product is apparently due to hindrance to the OsO4 to the top face of 3 by the bulky phthalimide group that may be held in the interfering orientation by hydrogen bonding between the hydrogen of the C-1 hydroxyl and a carbonyl oxygen of the phthalimide ring. Exclusive formation of the α-glycol has precedence in our laboratory
