Abstract

We, the Editors and Publisher of the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine, have retracted the following article:

EL-Gharib, M. N., & EL-Hawary, T. M. (2013). Matched sample comparison of intramuscular versus vaginal micronized progesterone for prevention of preterm birth. The Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine, 26(7), 716-719. https://doi.org/10.3109/14767058.2012.755165

Since publication, significant concerns have been raised about the integrity of the data and reported results in the article, as well as the safety of the study. Specifically, a concern has been raised that the study reports using intramuscular progesterone at a dose that has not been tested for safety. When the authors were approached for an explanation, we were informed that Dr. Gharib was deceased. Dr. Hawary did not provide responses to our queries about the study, the raw data for review, or evidence to confirm that the study complied with the journal's policies. As we cannot confirm the validity or safety of the trial as reported, we are therefore retracting the article. Dr. Hawary has been informed of this decision.

We have been informed in our decision-making by our Editorial Policies and COPE guidelines.

The retracted article will remain online to maintain the scholarly record, but it will be digitally watermarked on each page as 'Retracted'.
