- The author has in his collection two magnetite cylinder seals, These seals demonstrate all the properties of bar magnets. These seals and other objects were manufactured from magnetite over a period of perha2,000 years. Such objects all had some medical significance, at least in a broad, psychosomatic sense. It is hard to believe that simple observations on the behavior of magnets were not made by the manufacturers over this long period of time. Some of the inscriptions indicate otherwise. Nevertheless, as far as I know, there is no mention of these objects in any history of electricity and magnetism. In fact, the magnetite mines from which the materials for these items originated are usually referred to as “legendary.”
