The scientific area of biomaterials, which started as a branch and extension of organic/polymer synthesis, is rapidly expanding beyond simple polymers and is merging with biology. There are fruitful outcomes from the collaboration of materials science with biology for biomedical applications, such as biosensing, nanomedicine, drug delivery, and so on, and this field is expanding to pharmacology and other medical sciences. This special collection is a contemporary showcase of STAM publishing activity on biomaterials in the last few years. It is mainly composed of recent reviews and original research articles that are not listed in STAM focus issues.
