About this journal

Aims and scope

The Journal of Quantitative Linguistics is interested in work which systematically applies or develops mathematical and/or statistical concepts and methods to theoretical understanding of language phenomena. This covers the range of synchronic and diachronic subdomains of “theoretical” linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics etc.) and “applied” linguistics (sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, cognitive linguistics, pragmatics, text analysis, quantitative stylistics etc.). The introduction of mathematical and statistical concepts and methods from the natural sciences, physics, and cognitive science is particularly encouraged. A particular focus is the further theoretical foundation and empirical analysis of linguistic laws as like Zipf’s, Menzerath-Altmann’s law, Piotrovskij law and others.

Prospective authors are further advised that

  • JQL is interested in work which systematically applies or develops mathematical and/or statistical concepts and methods to theoretical understanding of language phenomena. The use of such concepts and methods or their computational implementation on an ad hoc basis in a research paper does not in itself qualify that paper for publication in JQL.
  • Work published in JQL is expected to advance theoretical understanding of any given language domain in mathematical and/or statistical terms. Simple application of existing theory to language data without substantive theoretical advancement is unlikely to be published in JQL.
